Possum Play

Many young ones starting to play competition don't have a grasp of the basics of competition play and we at Waverley Tennis totally recognise this and we have developed Possum Play to help young players learn these basics.

The benefits of Possum Play are:-

  • Give young and inexperienced players the opportunity to play competition whilst still learning
  • A beginners competition for children not ready for current Waverley Association competition
  • 8 week term event (7 home & away rounds and Grand Final)
  • 2 sections are available:
    • Brushtail for 11 & 12 year olds
    • RingTail for under 10s
  • Only 1 court required
  • Use Green (75% compression) balls
  • Start Sundays 8:45 for 9am Matchplay and finish by 11am
  • Children and Parents learn basic rules of tennis matchplay - Scoring, Position, Rules, Court maintenance and more
  • Join with a team of others to play matchplay
  • No cost charged by Waverley Association

By the time the players have participated in one or two terms of Possum Play, and move into D Grade regular competition they should know the following basics:-

  • How to Score and when to change ends
  • How to play doubles
  • Calling of balls in or out
  • Recognise singles vs doubles lines
  • Understand what constitutes a let
  • Have two balls before serving
  • Returning balls to server directly
  • Understanding the benefit of doubt
  • Bag courts (or have parents assist)

So, when you are registering your teams for the new season, please strongly consider placing your inexperienced players in Possum Play.  Let’s give them the head start and information necessary to play competition tennis that they deserve.
